The dugong is the only herbivorous marine mammal. In Japan, they have been found in the coastal waters around Nansei Shoto (Yaeyama - Okinawa - Amami). However, their population has been shrinking, and now only several dugongs live in the Okinawa Island. The dugong has been designated as the Japanese natural treasure and listed as the critically endangered species by Japan Ministry of Environment. In their last habitat, U. S. military base is planned to be constructed. Despite of the serious status of the Japanese dugong, Japanese government has not taken the effective conservation measures. They are really on the brink of extinction. We have already lost some animals such as Japanese wolf, Japanese crested ibis, Japanese river otter forever. If we do not take any measure to protect the extremely endangered dugongs, they will extinct in near future. In order to prevent further tragedies, lets start out something simple. We would like you to come to our booth and see and think about Japanese dugongs.
